This tranquil image is one of our favourites by Sam Dean and one of his as well! He took this shot on a trip one summer in New Hampshire.
“I rose early, hoping to get some morning light in the fog but there was so much that the horizon disappeared. I pushed this canoe and paddle onto the smooth surface of the lake and made this image.”
He describes his visual style as a natural light photographer. He likes to complement available light with one or two hard lights. For his shoots, he always tries ”to be fast, portable and adaptable.”
“I think that one of the main things you need to do as a photographer is to be able to adapt the image you have in mind to the circumstances you are presented with.”
This is what he suggests about finding work:
“I’m trying to focus my target market more. I think art buyers are looking for voice rather than just a good image. That’s always a challenge. I want to find real moments in what are sometimes very staged productions. Sometimes I succeed better than others.”
See you tomorrow for another one of Sam’s favourite images!
